About the PUCT

Mission & History

Mission:
We protect customers, foster competition, and promote high quality infrastructure.

 

What We Do:
The Public Utility Commission of Texas regulates the state’s electric and telecommunication utilities, implements respective legislation, and offers customer assistance in resolving consumer complaints.

The PUCT is involved in numerous electric grid modernization activities related to smart grid, including:

  • Advanced Metering
  • Energy Storage and Emerging Technologies
  • Electric Market and Infrastructure Issues Related to the Introduction of Electric Vehicles
  • Investigating Cyber Security of the Electric Utility Industry

Over 3 million smart meters have been installed in Texas; more than 6 million smart meters are expected to be operational in Texas by 2013.
