Substation Automation & Communication
Extensive experience in high-voltage and medium-voltage substations, combined with in-depth expertise in IEC 61850 technology makes ABB a world leading supplier of substation automation, control and protection systems. Building on this sound base, ABB offers complete solutions for smart digital substations.

Digital substation architectures are typically built on a hierarchical structure. The central station level holding station computers and gateways, the distributed bay level holding bay oriented protection and control IEDs and the process level with the primary equipment. To enable complete data exchange between the distributed devices on all hierarchical levels, a reliable communication backbone becomes an important element of the  system architecture.

ABB’s end-to-end offering combines world leading operational communications, automation, protection and control – we energize the digital grid.

SAP is the world leader in enterprise software, headquartered in Walldorf, Germany, with 66,500 employees located in more than 130 countries and annual revenue of € 16.8 billion.

SAP offers the most comprehensive portfolio of solutions for the utilities industry, enabling companies to meet the challenges of an end-to-end future proof energy value chain and more than 2200 world’s leading utilities companies rely on SAP solutions.

The utility industry is in the middle of an unprecedented transformation. Constrained by finite resources and challenged by climate change, steadily growing demand, and an aging infrastructure, utilities must also respond to tough new energy policies and demand-side activism.

One key element to address these challenges is the convergence of operational systems like distribution and outage management systems or automated meter infrastructures with enterprise systems like work management, customer care and billing systems. The industry standards CIM and IEC-61850/61400 enable the sharing of data across the entire information ecosystem. SAP intends to use these standards and is therefore joining the UCA International user group for collaboration and contribution.
